Allison Potanovic is a flutist based in the lower Hudson Valley and the greater New England area. She is a member of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra in New York, and she is a co-founding member of The Sunrise Duet — a Connecticut-based flute and harp duo with harpist Mae Cooke. She is a recurring soloist in the Divine Music Series through The Chapel of St. John the Divine in Tomkins Cove, New York, and actively performs as both a soloist and ensemble member in different performances and gigs throughout the area. Allison holds a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from The Hartt School in West Hartford, Connecticut and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York, where she graduated with honors. Allison has been teaching and mentoring flute since 2017, working with flutists ranging in levels from beginner to advanced. Dedication to artistry, curiosity, and creativity are at the heart of her teaching style, with students receiving instruction tailored to meet and exceed their ambitions and interests. In her personal life, she is a passionate advocate for the arts and equitable access to music education, and she works to make music as approachable and inviting to students of all ages and backgrounds as possible.

 

As a graduate student at The Hartt School, Allison studied under Professor Janet Arms. Allison presented the U.S. premiere of Grammy-nominated composer Michael Shapiro’s In The Light of The Sun concerto for flute at her final graduate recital in May 2025. As a member of The Sunrise Duet, she and Mae Cooke presented the world premiere of composer Talia Berenbaum’s piece Night Sayings for flute/alto flute and harp. In March 2026, the duo performed for New England Public Radio’s The Fabulous 413.

 

While studying in Potsdam, she was a student of Professor Emeritus Ken Andrews and Professor Jill Rubio. She was a member of the Resonance Wind Quintet and performed with the group for the entirety of her time in Potsdam. In 2021, she performed as principal in the Crane Candlelight Concert — a critically acclaimed annual series broadcasted nationally and in Canada through Mountain Lake PBS. In 2022, Allison played piccolo with the Orchestra of Northern New York for their Dreams of Spring concert series, and later that year, she played alto flute with the Crane Flute Ensemble at the National Flute Association convention in Chicago, Illinois.

 

Before pursing higher education, Allison won a prize in the Morning Music Club’s 2018 scholarship competition. Earlier examples of performances in her career include a side-by-side concert with the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2016 and her time with the Hudson Lyric Opera, where she began in 2016 and remained for six operas. She has also performed on different woodwind instruments in various productions with theatre companies including Yorktown Stage, Elmwood Playhouse, and New Generation Theatre, among others.

 

Additionally, Allison regularly plays alto flute and bass flute in concert, along with other members of the extended family of flutes. She is very passionate about studying flutes of different global and historical origins.
